You may or may not be aware of the recent development of AI that generates “art.” Users simply type in a string of keyword prompts and the program, such as Midjourney, NightCafe, or Dall-E2, produce a unique image in under a minute.

This technology is useful to a person who want to make a Valentine’s Day card for a loved one, or a skilled artist who wants to augment their own work. But the issue is that much like the dinosaurs at Jurassic Park, this beast won’t stay contained.

I feel it is important to share why this is a problem for artists, not only those who work digitally, but for the fundamental reasons of why art matters to society in the first place. Rather than get into the thick of it all at once, I think it would be better to elaborate in multiple parts in upcoming posts.
